Tasty Morning Bytes – Voting Rights, Kaplan Law School, City Tavern Club

Good morning, DCentric readers! Welcome back from all that tryptophan and traffic.

Mask-wearing protestors in D.C. can now be arrested “The D.C. Council has unanimously passed a strongly worded bill to deal with an animal rights group that has been known to wear masks and appear unannounced outside District residents’ homes shouting things like “You should die.” Residents have been complaining to their council members that they felt “terrorized.” Critics of the bill say it’s too broad and limits First Amendment rights.” (Washington Examiner )

For D.C. voting rights, window appears closed “Now, with Republicans set to take over the House in January, the window to move a voting rights bill appears to have closed, and glum supporters are wondering what – if anything – to do next. “I think the best shot we had at voting rights was probably last year,” said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.),” (The Washington Post)

Residents decry raging student parties’ noise, urination and vomiting “In case you don’t already know, there was a party last night at 3303/05 O Street with a couple of hundred very drunk and/or high kids,” wrote Bob Laycock, treasurer of CAG. “The noise was out of control!! I called 911 around 11:30. The police arrive promptly and dispersed the crowd. The partygoers only walked a few hundred feet away, waited until the police were gone and then returned to the party house and make even more noise. I called 911 again, and again the police arrived promptly along with two GU police cars. The crowd continued to make noise as they left O street. They also harassed one neighbor who was walking her puppy threatening to defecate on her front stoop.” (thegeorgetowndish.com)

Kaplan Looking for Law School Space in Near Southeast “Real estate developers and brokers in Southeast Washington say that Kaplan has been looking for office space suitable for the opening of a law school near the Washington Nationals’ baseball stadium. “Speaking on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized by Kaplan to discuss the company’s plans, the sources say Kaplan hired the real estate brokerage firm Jones Lang LaSalle and has been seeking up to 130,000 square feet in the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District, around the Nationals’ park, so it can open a law school there in 2013.” (JDland: DC Redevelopment )

Looking Back: City Tavern Club “…let’s look at a building that is steeped in the privileged and exclusive past of our city and its founding fathers. It’s a pretty plain-looking brick building you’ve probably walked by dozens of times in Georgetown and never noticed. City Tavern Club, 3206 M Street NW, was constructed in 1796 and first managed by Clement Sewall, who served in the American Revolution. The tavern was a popular destination for the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams.” (DCist)
