America’s racism against blacks extend way beyond these borders.  We export this image through our media and so immigrants (Latino, Asian, other) have the notion that black Americans are inferior to white people (lazy, criminals, poor etc.) long before they get here. Turn on the TV and survey the programming and you’ll see it right before your eyes. A country as diverse has this sure have a hard time showing positive images (if any) of any other ethnic group but white (and the occasional bi-racial) persons.

The idiotic suggestion that because someone is from a minority background or has ‘black family’ members confounds me.  Zimmerman went out of his way to bring up Trayvon’s race-…’and he’s black’ when speaking to the 911 operator. Then directly disobeyed an order to cease following the child. He shot and killed a child as a result of disobeying an order to stop. Justice should be served, but if this vigilante is half a man, he’d make an attempt sooner or later to apologize to Martin’s parents for taking a life unwarranted.

Whether or not Zimmerman has black family members is inconsequential.  We do not select our families.  The fact is that he made six other calls to 911 before killing Trayvon.  Four of those calls were to report “suspicious looking” black people. ‘Nuff said!

It is not that some Hispanics are ”accepted”as white, but that they are white – at least, as white as those who classify as such in this country.  Hispanics or Latinos are an ethnic/cultural group, people of various backgrounds who are united by the Spanish language and Latin-American culture.  They can be of any color or “race”.  Some are of European background, some of indigenous heritage, some have African ancestry, even Asian, and many are a mixture of any of the above.  Americans, in their ignorance about  people of the world, can’t understand that, so they get confused when someone with a non-Spanish name or who lack the stereotypical Latin look turns out to be Hispanic.  The father of the man who shot Trayvon Martin may be American, but it is not that unusual to find people named Zimmerman in Latin American,  particularly in those countries with a large Jewish population. Plenty of people with English, Italian, German, Slavic and other European names, too.  Quite a few people of Middle-Eastern background, too.
South America in particular, has had immigrants, not just from Europe, but from all over the world.  Their descendants considered themselves as Latin-American  as everyone else in the continent.

The U.S. doesn’t need to export its racism beyond its borders. Racism exists everywhere, regardless of the U.S. Unless you subscribe to some myth that racism originated in the U.S. and spread world-wide through TV. Please. Lighter-skinned folk have been dumping on darker-skinned folk all over the globe for centuries. I.e., in Mexico the upper class is white and almost never mixes with the dark-skinned indigenous groups — likewise with most of Latin America.

Zimmerman is by far a “spanish speaking minority” in Florida. Please, hispanic trying to fit into white america.

I believe the obvious has somewhat been clouded by the same thing (social network) that has helped to shed more light to this awful tragedy. It’s not the fact that it was between what’s mistakenly pronounced as black and white males, by some, but the complete handling or mishandling, if you will, of the case, due to the fact that the victim was a black male. I believe those variables are what prompts one to then bring in the division of races along with the mere fact that Hispanics are not apart of the Black group although both sides are often synonymous with the term “minority”. Thus the many examples and out cries of : “had Trayvon been white….  SIMPLY STATING  AN OPEN OPINION WHICH AT LEAST WE STILL HAVE THAT RIGHT TO DO…FOR NOW.

So, this was such a tragic story because everyone just assumed Zimmerman was “some Jew” who shot a black man??????  Is it not as tragic now that he’s been identified as Hispanic?  The numerous black on black crimes are not as tragic?  Time for people to check their stereotypes and anti-semitism.  All of you people were so ready to make this the next story ONLY because you heard the name Zimmerman.  Shame on you all.  Every life is valuable, regardless of the ethnicity of the murderer.

brown and black people in Latin American countries face racism and discrimination from white people in those countries.  when those white people from Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia, Venezuela, Argentina, etc. immigrate to the USA, they encounter US racial/ethnic ideologies.  they are Latinos, but they are “white Latinos” or “white Hispanics”.  they may be able to “pass” for white, but culturally and linguistically they are Latino/Hispanic.  some white Hispanics have experienced racism from Anglo-Saxon white people who are xenophobic and look down upon Hispanics (whether the Hispanic person in question is white, black, or brown).  but, on the other hand, some white Hispanics harbor racism against black and brown people, and seek to assimilate into mainstream Anglo white American culture (by distancing themselves from brown/black Latinos).

The media is constantly pitting ‘Whites’ against ‘Hispanics’  in immigration issues.   Now when it is convenient to make a story racist the description changes and Hispanics are now white.  You can’t have it both ways.  There might indeed be a racist element to the story but you should stop calling it white on black.

Actually, Janet Pate, that is untrue.  Hispanics can be white, black, indigenous, mestizo, mulatto, or even Asian.

In the US census, Latinos mark “Hispanic” for their ethnicity, and then they mark either “white”, “black”, “Asian/Pacific Islander”, “American Indian”, or “Other race” for their race.  Most Latinos mark either “white” or “other race” for their race.

White Hispanics or White Latinos are people who immigrated from Latin American countries (or whose parents/grandparents immigrated) but whose racial ancestry is Caucasian/European (mostly Spanish or Portuguese, but also including French, English, Jewish, etc.).  White Latinos are considered “blanco” (white) in their country of origin, whether it is Bolivia, Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, etc.  As is well-known, Latin American countries were colonized by Spain and Portugal for hundreds of years.  The (white) descendents of the Spanish and Portuguese colonizers are the people that are currently referred to as white Latin Americans.

In the United States, there is an official differentiation between “White Hispanics” and “Non-Hispanic Whites” in the census.  Just because George Zimmerman isn’t a “Non-Hispanic White” doesn’t mean that he isn’t white or part white.  There are differences between Anglo-Saxon/Nordic white people on the one hand, and white Hispanics/Latinos on the other.  But they’re all white people.

So I absolutely maintain that referring to him as a “white Hispanic” (or a “multiracial Hispanic”) is correct.  If the media were to refer to him as a “mestizo”, Latinos (and Filipinos) would understand what that meant, but most other US Americans would not understand.  But most significantly, the Sanford Police Department itself referred to Zimmerman as a “white male”.  Clearly, the “white” part of Zimmerman’s “white Hispanic” identity was what the Sanford police cared most about with regards to Zimmerman’s “race”.

As Latinos continue to increase in numbers and political power in the USA, I believe that we will need to get used to making this distinction between Hispanic whites and non-Hispanic whites.  As it currently is, we US Americans are so used to assuming that “white” refers exclusively to Anglo-Saxon or Nordic white people.  Now, we need to get rid of that assumption, and comprehend the complexity of white/European identity.  Not all white people in the USA are descended from northern/western Europeans; there are also millions of white people whose ancestors come from Latin America (but whose ancestors’ ancestors originally came from Spain/Portugal/other parts of Europe).

So yeah, it’s not so popular yet for US Americans to talk about “White Latinos” or “White Hispanics” or “Mestizos” in the national discourse, but again, now that Latinos (not only white Latinos, but also black and brown Latinos) are increasing in numbers and political strength, the rest of us US Americans are gonna need to get used to it.

It is going to hit Mr. Zimmerman someday, if it hasn’t yet, that he took the life of an innocent boy. Torment for anyone not a sociopath. If he doesn’t get jail time he will still pay with his mental health if he has an ounce of humanity.

Obama’s white grandparents were not just involved in his life they raised him. If I remember correctly he only met his father 2 or 3 times in his whole life. George Zimmerman discovered to be part Hispanic.   So what? 
My reactions are based on many actions in the Hispanic (Latino, Latin
American, etc.) community and direct observations in the realm of identity
politics.  I am an “African American”
woman, who visually has a lot in common with the mestizaje or “mixed
race” members of the various Hispanic communities. 

To make the point finer: When I lived in
the SF/Bay Area in the 1970s, there were fewer Latinos than today in the
general population.  Latinos would greet
me with “¿Cómo está?”  — a more formal and yet distancing
greeting.  I was still perceived as Other
or a good Afro sister, but friendly.  (A point:
Latino is aggregate. A Mexicano, is not a Cubano, is not a Puertorriqueño, and
is not a Salvadoreña.

Years later, the
number of Latinos with various colors and hues overlapped with those of African
Americans.  The greetings changed to
“hola,” and a wave, an indication of group inclusion until it was learned that
I was not a Latina,
Spanish speaking or no. Eventually, the number of Latinos soared. The greetings
were sometimes interspersed with “Hola, hermana” or “Hi, sister.”  We, lighter-skinned African Americans and
Latinas, had begun, except for language, to “look alike”. Rarely, did I observe
or hear about the same greeting used with darker African Americans.   In
most Latin-American countries, the darker people are called Negros and Zambos and are discriminated against and
avoided.

In both the U.S. and most of Latin
America what sets people apart is the proverbial color line.  Not the color line that DuBois referred to
when comparing Blacks (or Negroes) versus White, but the intragroup “light
versus dark” color line.  The terms,
“mulatto” (a Spanish term) dredges up the comparisons drawn between the
privileges of “field Negroes” (dark and few) and “house Negroes” (mulatto or
light and greater).  Those differences
are the same as found in the Latino communities with caste terms, such as, morenos (browns), or zambos (Indian and Black) versus blancos (White or European). 

Today, lighter-skinned
Latinos often identify racially as “White” and ethnically “of color”.  In short, it’s an identity two-way street.  When benefits are distributed (especially
those to assuage injustice and discrimination toward African Americans) or they
are in legal trouble many Latinos want to be considered “minorities”.  But for the privileges, these same Latinos check
“White” on the forms for racial identity, much like the Italians, Sicilians and
Irish learned to do in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.  Comedian Richard Pryor used to do a skit
whereby he said: The first word immigrants learn when they get “off the boat,”
is N—-r.

Supposedly, George
Zimmerman was of Peruvian (mother) and White (father) descent.  Many would say, “Peruvian? WTH is Peru?”   Yet, Peru, and its Slave Trade should
not be left out.  Enslaved Africans
brought directly to Peru
were designated bozales (“unskilled, untrained).  Peru’s pigmentocracy hierarchy was:
Spaniards at the top, mestizos in the
middle, and Africans and the indigenous populations at the bottom.  As New
York writer and activist Michaela Angela Davis says, “George Zimmerman’s Hispanic roots
don’t give him cover.” 

It is intriguing
that in the midst of trouble and a possible arrest for murder, George
Zimmerman’s father would play the card, “we’re just another minority group
called Hispanic.”  “Some of our best
friends are…”    Obviously, George
Zimmerman had an overactive and live, “wanna-be-a-White-Boy-so-bad-complex”
which led to him to carry a gun, be a “badass” 
and look to shoot one of “those people” (why else carry a gun and follow
Black people).  

Hispanics’ identity
choices and the downstream consequences should and must be explored before
Hispanics choose the route that so many light-skinned marginalized immigrants
have taken before their entry into the American culture.  The title of books tells the history: “How
the Irish Became White” [Ignatiev] (and “How Jews became
White Folks” [Brodkin] and “How the Asians Became White” [Volokh].

While it will take
some time to drill down into the forensics of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, I can
say with all confidence, “Playing the Hispanic card doesn’t mitigate
murder.”  ” “El asesinato es un asesinato.”  ¿Entiende usted que?

a) It wan’t race oriented, Zimmerman was on a neighborhood watch and spotted an unfamiliar face strolling around the area.

b) It wasn’t murder.  The police investigated the crime and determined it was self defense.  An eye witness saw Trayvon striking Zimmerman while he laid on his back and called for help.  The eyewitness then immediately called police and relayed that exact story.

c) The police cannot arrest someone that has not committed a crime.

It is a horrible tragedy that unfolded as no one could have expected or wanted.  The fact that the black community wants to whip up race hatred against Latinos is disturbing.

Dear Latino Americans:  Welcome to the club!  Now you know what it feels like to have the black community foment race hatred against you, using a terrible tragedy as a pretext.

Please remember this when you vote in November.  Will you reward Al, Jesse and the Black Panthers?

Ok, Lets set aside race for a moment and think for ourselves. If you are the neighborhood watch who spots anybody walking alone in the rain at night, what is your first thought? Now put you self in the shoes of the teenager walking home and you notice somebody following you, what is your first thought? If Zimmerman was a racist and out for cold blood, Martin would have been shot in the back as he ran away. If Martin was an innocent ‘little boy’, he wouldnt have broken Zimmermans nose. The fact of the matter is that their is a dead teenager. To me its black and white. Martin wasnt sure why he was being followed and decided to show his pursuer whos boss. When the fight continues martin realizes the gun and tries to get it from Zimmerman. Now both parties are fighting for the death. The Media is so messed up they can take a case that is as clear as day, and get the whole United States consumed, and turn Americans against eachother. This particular case is one that not only the courts but most importantly, God will have to resolve and He will in His timing and not ours..

I am a successful, black, young, educated, male, Sunday-school teacher, usher, Christian and the accolades continue to pour in, pardon these personal references, however I can honestly say…..yes race was a factor because if this was any other race i believe 1. I live in Los Angeles where it is legal for Hispanic Illegal Immigrants to drive drunk without a license nor insurance and should they get pulled over nothing will happen to them because they are Hispanic living in a “sanctuary” city.  A white five year old child was ran over by an illegal drunk Hispanic driver and nothing happened to the Hispanic man.  Yet a life was lost simply because the boy was crossing the street. 

Tell me why that is fair?  Because if a black man were to be pulled over without a license or car insurance, guess what would happen to him??!!!  He would be profiled as yet another black gangster, his car would be impounded, he would get tickets and probably arrested and beaten up all because he is black.  Yet if he was illegal or even legal but Hispanic, he gets a free pass.
