"American" to define residents of the USA  was a phrase coined not by Americans, but by the colonial brits, to emphasize that britians born in the USA were not actually british, but were american. It was an intended insult that became the name of people living in the USA.  There is no insult to the Americas as a hemisphere when Americans use this term.  I do believe we are the only country in either hemisphere to use "America" in the name of their country
