Ledroit Park is full of relatively well-off professionals, low-income public housing residents, and Howard University students, probably in equal measures. Ledroit Park is a small neighborhood with good access to transit, and there are multiple grocery stores within 1.5 miles (Harris Teeter at 1st & M NE, Safeway 5th & K NW, Giant 7th & O NW). So why the attention when east of the river in wards 7 & 8 shopping options are so limited? And everyone knows that a new grocery store will be opening near U st or Shaw metro within the next few years... well, neither timor nor windows are in Ledroit Park. but it is a bizarre neighborhood to focus on in my opinion, and I thought the story lacked relevant demographic info. I wonder how many other neighborhoods in the city got the USDA label of a "food desert" but actually have a number of such options. Except that it does. As does Windows. Sure, LeDroit Park is a food desert, as long as you pretend Field to City (nee Timor Bodega) doesn’t exist. Except that it does. As does Windows.
